Your first step to cutting your fuel bills is to monitor your energy usage. Don't rely on your utility bills, the only way to be sure of what you are using is to read your meter on a weekly basis, ideally at the same time each week.

Your second step is to do a walk-round survey of your business premises. You don't need to be an expert - its mostly common sense, however a checklist can help, download ‘Walk around checklist - Hospitality (CTL047)' from the Carbon Trust.

Your third step is to draft a plan. Use the information generated by your walk-round survey and energy monitoring to categorise the required issues/actions by;

  • timescale for implementation
  • required investment
  • environmental and financial paybacks
  • required knowledge.

Some simple actions can be implemented straight away, such as;

  • asking guests to switch off appliances rather than leave them on standby
  • turning all thermostats down and turning thermostats in unoccupied rooms right down.

Your fourth step is to tie your environmental plan into your business plan so that you can put it into action!
