Composting

- the easiest way to recycle your waste!

Almost a third of household rubbish is organic and suitable for composting. By taking it out of the bin you're helping to protect the environment and reduce the need for landfills and incinerators.

Composted kitchen and garden waste is a great alternative to expensive artificial fertilisers and peat. In Britain alone up to 94% of peat bogs have been damaged, destroying the habitat of many endangered or rare plants and animals. Garden bonfires pollute and create a nuisance - composting stops the need for burning.

How does it work?

1. Collect all your suitable kitchen and garden waste e.g. Vegetable Peelings, Tea Bags, egg shells, Grass Cuttings, Leaves, Shredded Paper/card, Fruit Skin, wood ash, sawdust etc

Don't put in meat, fish or bones - cooking oils and fats, cat and dog faeces, glossy paper, plastic, glass, metal, diseased plants.

2. Place in your compost bin

3. Place an old piece of carpet on the top to keep the warmth in.

4. All sorts of mini beasts from minute organisms to worms break down the waste, resulting in a free supply of compost!

To buy a compost bin from Conwy Borough Council phone Environmental Services, Business Support, 01492 575235/575236

For more information on composting from Gwynedd Council phone the Waste/Recycling Helpline, 01286 679872 or email: recycling@gwynedd.gov.uk

Brown bins for the collection of green waste are available in some areas - but if you can compost on site do so, as it reduces the costs, both financial and environmental, of transporting to a municipal composting facility.
